PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — The Virginia Department of Health is reporting 604 new cases of COVID-19 statewide and 12 new deaths related to the virus.
State health officials also reported 72 new Virginian residents hospitalized due to the COVID-19.
As of Sunday, April 26, the total number of cases in Virginia is up to 12,970.
More than 1,000 of those cases are at long-term facilities in the commonwealth, with 80 deaths at those facilities — mostly at one in Henrico County.
According to the Richmond-based, non-profit organization Virginia Public Access Project, Fairfax County holds the highest number of reported COVID-19 related deaths (95) statewide with Henrico just trailing behind with 89 as of Sunday.
For the Tidewater area, Accomack County reported the highest daily increase of COVID-19 cases with 41 reported in one day. On Saturday, 46 new cases were reported from Friday. Just a week before, Accomack only had 33 cases from the county’s population of just over 32,400 residents. The county now has a total of 187 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
Southampton County also saw another increase in cases with 40 added to Saturday’s previously reported total of 75. The county currently has 115 cases of COVID-19 as of Sunday morning.

108 cases, 33 hospitalized, 5 deaths (43 new cases compared to last Sunday, April 19)

208 cases, 45 hospitalized, 6 deaths (46 new cases compared to last Sunday, April 19)
Hampton
104 cases, 28 hospitalized, 1 death (21 new cases compared to last Sunday, April 19)
Newport News
111 cases, 32 hospitalized, 6 deaths (10 new cases compared to last Sunday, April 19)
Suffolk
147 cases, 31 hospitalized, 5 deaths (56 new cases compared to last Sunday, April 19)
Southampton County
115 cases, 3 hospitalized, 1 death (99 new cases compared to last Sunday, April 19)
Isle of Wight County

Most people who contract the new coronavirus only suffer “mild” to moderate symptoms and can recover at home isolation. However, the virus can cause severe illness or death for some who contract it, particularly older adults and those with underlying health conditions.
