Virginia Peninsula Foodbank offers groceries at drive-thru locations to aid during COVID-19 crisis

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — The Virginia Peninsula Foodbank is hosting another drive-thru food distribution event Friday to aid families during the coronavirus pandemic.

Friday’s event is from 10 a.m. to noon at Darling Stadium, 4111 Victoria Blvd., in Hampton.

No drivers will be allowed to get out of their cars while picking up groceries. Volunteers will place the food directly into the driver’s trunk.

This keeps everyone safe and practicing social distancing. You must have your trunk cleared. If your trunk is not cleared, you will be asked to pull aside and you will have to load your food items yourself.

On Wednesday, the food bank served about 500 households, per Karen Joyner, the foodbank’s chief executive officer.

“We’re going to be here for the long haul, as long as we are able to operate. We will continue to operate providing food for the community,” said Joyner. “There is a lot of people who are already food insecure on a day to day basis. Now you have all of the hospitality workers, restaurants, places that have closed down and they are not able to pay their staff. So, all of them are going to end up in our line eventually. It is just a matter of time as to when they miss their first paycheck.”

If you need help, visit the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank’s Get Help section here. There you can find a list of additional resources by city and zip code. The foodbank recommends calling partner agencies before visiting them in person to confirm their hours of operation.

“This is a disaster of a different kind, Joyner said. “We are operating under our disaster plan. We officially have an incident commander who keeps track of what everybody is doing … this is very, very unusual — unprecedented.”
