HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Henrico Fire and EMS worked for hours Tuesday evening to rescue a 71-year old woman who had her legs pinned in a trash compactor at the Legend at Virginia Center Apartments, off of Virginia Center Parkway.

According to Henrico Fire’s spokesperson, Captain Rob Rowley, authorities received a call around 7:50 p.m. about a 71-year-old woman who had her “legs pinned” in the compactor.

Henrico Fire responded to the scene where efforts to get the woman free took hours as firefighters were forced to remove and work through the trash. Emergency responders got the woman out at around 9:30 p.m.

A witness at the scene, Jody Land, spoke with 8News about what people were thinking during the incident.

“Thought somebody was dead,” Land said, “to be honest with you, when they said she was okay, everybody was relieved so, we didn’t know what was going on so we just heard the sirens and we all came out.”

The woman, who was not identified by authorities, was taken to a local hospital to be examined for her injuries.
