Hertford town councilman accused of punching fellow councilman

HERTFORD, N.C. (WAVY) – A town councilman is out of jail after allegedly punching a fellow member at Monday night’s meeting.

The incident took place in the small North Carolina town of Hertford.

Quentin Jackson is accused of punching Sid Eley.

According to court records, as the meeting ended Jackson approached Eley.

Eley told police that Jackson asked him why he wasn’t going to support the Democratic Party in the November elections.

The council members were face to face. Eley says Jackson told him to back up and when he moved back a little Jackson punched him in the temple. The force knocked Eley’s glasses off his face.

Jackson was arrested by Hertford Police.  He is out on $1,000 bond.

10 On Your Side spoke to Eley over the phone.  He said he couldn’t comment on the case, but did say he was doing all right.

This isn’t Jackson’s first run in with the law. 10 On Your Side interviewed him in February after he was accused of resisting arrested during a traffic stop — a charge Jackson disagreed with.

Jackson says he punched Eley out of self defense.  He tells 10 On Your Side he begged Eley to back up, and when he didn’t he felt he was forced to defend himself.

Jackson is scheduled to be in court on the charge October 10.
