HAMPTON, Va (WAVY) — The night Tommy Westfall died, he was headed home after celebrating birthdays — including his own.
Westfall was set to turn 24 at the end of the month, according to his mother Jamice. But Saturday night, he was killed in a two-vehicle crash.
Jamice says he had left Olive Garden, where they were celebrating, around 7:33 p.m. Hampton Police told her the crash happened on Fox Hill Road at 7:45 p.m. He was minutes away from his home.
It was the last time Jamice saw her youngest son.
“I feel lost right now. I don’t know how I’m going to get through it,” said Jamice.
According to police, Westfall was driving north of Fox Hill Road when he collided with a Chevy Cobalt carrying a woman and infant heading south. Both the woman and infant were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
A police spokesperson said Monday the two were now in stable condition.
Details of the crash are still under investigation.
Jamice tells 10 On Your Side she went to the scene of the crash when she realized Tommy had not made it home.
“I knew immediately when I got there that it was Tommy. I could see a piece of his car,” she said. “I was out there for hours and all I wanted to do was to touch him.”
Now, Jamice is left with memories.
“He had the most beautiful blue eyes and the best smile. My blue-eyed boy,” she said as she described Tommy.
Jamice tells 10 On Your Side that her son always put others before himself. “You know, he would never intentionally, you know, put someone in harm’s way,” she said.
The days to come will be the hardest, but while she is mourning her own loss, she says her heart is with the other family that was impacted by the crash.
“I can’t imagine Tommy not being here. I know if he were, he’d be more worried about the lady and her daughter, because that’s who he was. He had a good heart. He cared about people,” Jamice said.
Tommy loved working on old cars and motorcycles with his family and most of all loved life, Jamice said. Right now, that’s how she will remember him.
