BELLE HAVEN, Va. (WAVY) — A well-traversed portion of backroad on the Bayside of the Eastern Shore south of Belle Haven will be closed though at least late spring 2025.
VDOT announced that major work on the Route 602 project started on Monday, and for the first section of the project Route 602 (Lee Street) will be closed to through traffic between Route 178 (Belle Haven Road) and east of Darby’s Wharf Lane.
Detours will be in place taking drivers on to Route 13 and to Route 183 (Occohannock Neck Road) to get back on to Route 602 in the meantime, though access to private property and two cemeteries in the area will remain in place.
After Lee Street, the next portion of the project will improve about 1.2 miles on Route 602 (Cemetery Road) in Northampton County.
The $5.5 million project was awarded to Branscome, Inc. in October 2023 to help extend the life of the roadway, It’ll also improve draining and the width of the road, including added a paved 4-foot-wide shoulder for bicyclists.
VDOT says Route 602 is classified as a Rural Major Collector, with about 625 average daily vehicles. That’s expected to increase to 700 vehicles per day by 2034.
