UPDATE: Westside Elementary will be closed again Wednesday, Sept. 5, as a part is installed to replace the AC system’s motor. Repairs are expected to be made by 4 p.m. Wednesday and the school will reopen Thursday.
ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. (WAVY) — Students at Westside Elementary will get at least one more day tacked on to summer vacation thanks to a malfunctioning air conditioning system.
The public school in Smithfield will close Tuesday after maintenance workers discovered the system failed sometime between Sunday evening and Monday morning. Temperatures are expected to be in the upper-80s on Tuesday.
School officials say they’ll make a decision Tuesday afternoon about whether classes will start Wednesday. A new replacement part for the AC is needed, but officials say if that’s not available they’ll work to repair the part in the meantime.
