PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — The American Red Cross is looking for blood and platelet donors as a national shortage continues.

As severe storms spread across the U.S., causing devastation and injuries, the need for blood donations is more dire. Over the past month, the Red Cross had about 20,000 fewer donations than what was needed for its supply. Memorial Day to Labor Day is what’s known by AAA as the “100 deadliest days” for car accidents, meaning an even higher need for a replenished blood supply.

“Emergencies take many forms – some arising in a hospital and others arising as relentless and devastating storms,” said Kristopher Dumschat, Regional Communications Manager of the Red Cross Virginia Region.
