HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — School is out for the summer and that means some children may not have access to meals and snacks. The USDA’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is designed to address this issue.

According to the website, “the SFSP is a federally funded, state-administered program that reimburses providers who serve free, nutritious meals and snacks to children and teens in low-income areas when school is not in session.”

The program is open to children up to age 18. However, persons over the age of 18 with disabilities and participate in school programs for people with mental or physical disabilities are eligible.

Summer Food Service Program sites are located throughout the seven cities.

“To be able to play our small part in that, which is being able to provide food for them (and) it’s something they don’t have to worry about it as much in the summer, is an honor for the Foodbank,” said Christopher Tan, Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore President and CEO.

The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore is one of the organizations working with community partners to get food in kids’ hands.

“This opportunity allows us to provide a little bit of food … so places like the Boys and Girls Club can focus on what they are good at,” Tan said, “which is providing an amazing opportunity for kids to be entertained and supervised.”

Georvian Copeland has gone to the Portsmouth Boys and Girls Club for about a year and a half. Copeland enjoys spending summers there and also likes the meals provided.

“It gives me more variety of what I eat every day. It gives us something to eat throughout the day if we don’t have something at home to bring or eat at home,” Copeland said.
