CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A local woman has turned her car into a mobile pantry, serving those experiencing homelessness in Hampton Roads, and as her initiative grows, she’s seeking additional community help.
Jennifer Golding is one of those rare people who can’t help but help others.
“I actually started out with helping families when their houses burned down,” Bolding said.
Then, as a truck driver for STG Logistics, she started noticing the homeless on the roadside, often coming across those needing a hot meal.
“I would help people at truck stops,” she said. “If they were standing out with a sign, I would cook them something in the back of my truck, I had a fridge and a microwave.”
Her need to give morphed into Cruisin’ to Help the Homeless — a project she hopes soon to turn into a nonprofit. Running for three months, she’s already helped between 75 and 100 people.
“Homelessness is an issue that’s always there, unfortunately, and not a lot of resources and stuff can help with that,” she said.
She has turned her very distinctive green car into a one-stop-shop for practically anything you’d need, from toiletries and clothing, to dog food.
Greg McGill has been on the streets for five years.
“She’s a very special woman, I just can’t believe what she’s done for us,” McGill said. “I had three strokes. It destroyed my life. But I’m also very fortunate to be standing. So, I’m going to get there one day — again. But it’s hard.”
And sometimes, Bolding gives more than what’s needed on the surface.
“There’s a couple, I’ve just gone into Wendy’s and sat down and had a burger and a conversation with them,” Bolding said.
Tending to those physical, and spiritual, needs.
“The end goal, if I can help people get off the street, that would be the end goal, you know, to give them the stuff they need to survive,” she said.
Bolding pays for most of the donations out of her own pocket. If you’d like to donate items or help monetarily, you can email Jennifer Bolding at CruisinToHelpTheHomeless@yahoo.com.
