CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Police have identified the two people killed in what investigators say was a domestic murder-suicide in Chesapeake Saturday night.

22-year-old Collin Earl Smith-Aiken and 20-year-old Aniece Marie Gonzalez, both from Portsmouth, were married to each other at the time of this incident.

According to Chesapeake Police, they received a call for gunshots heard near the intersection of George Washington Highway North and Canal Drive just after 11 p.m. Saturday.

Two people were in a car northbound on George Washington near Canal Tires. Police say Mrs. Gonzalez was driving, when Mr. Smith-Aiken shot and killed her from the passenger seat. He then got out of the car, took a few steps and shot himself. A witness, who did not want to be identified, said he heard three shots in quick succession. That’s when Chuck Brown walked out of the 7-Eleven across Canal Drive.

“Someone was laying on the ground. He got up, the ambulance came, he got up on his own and then they put him on a stretcher,” Brown said in a Monday morning interview.

Smith-Aiken died a few hours later at the hospital. It’s unclear what led to the shooting.

Brown, who works at Canal Tires and lives nearby, says it’s another tragic example of the violence in the area.

“I think there’s a lot of people walking around with guns that really shouldn’t have them,” he said.

Police said another woman who had stopped to see what was going on was wounded by gunfire while still in her car. It’s unclear whether she was targeted or struck by a stray bullet. She was not seriously hurt and did not seek medical help.

Police released the names of the two deceased on Tuesday, after notifying their families.
