CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A Chesapeake couple made a shocking discovery this past weekend. They found a bolt—a type of projectile shot from a crossbow—sticking out of their above ground pool.

It was a scary discovery for these homeowners, who say it was a miracle none of their children was hit.

The hole is patched up now, but pictures show what Amy Vuono found Sunday while picking up leaves in the backyard.

“And I’m just down there scooping up into the bag and out of corner of my eye there was a yellow thing sticking out of the pool,” Amy Vuono said.

That ‘yellow thing’ — a bolt shot from a crossbow. It punctured the lining and tore a hole through Vuono’s sense of security.

“My biggest concern, obviously, was, the first thing I said was, the boys or the dogs could have been back here,” she said. “It is scary cause they play sports; they do come back here and throw the ball around or kick the soccer ball or whatever.”

No one was injured, but had it been summertime, it might have been another story.

“I was honestly in disbelief,” she said. “Just because you hear of stray bullets and stuff sometimes, maybe? I’ve never heard of a stray arrow or crossbow or whatever.”

Police have since taken the bolt for evidence. Meanwhile, they say they’ve never had any trouble with their neighbors. But they would like whoever is responsible to come forward and pay for damages.

“Again, we’re not trying to get someone in trouble legally,” she said, “just let it be a lesson learned that, you know, that’s dangerous. And to have some integrity, if you mess something up that’s not yours, pay for it.”

Amy and her husband Tony now have to decide to what extent they want to fix their pool—whether or not to get a new liner, which could cost up to $3,000.
