CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – After no gas odor was detected in the store, the Chesapeake Walmart was allowed to reopen Wednesday evening.
Fire crews responded to the Walmart at 1521 Sams Circle in the Greenbrier area of Chesapeake for a smell of gas in the building early Wednesday evening, officials say. It came hours after the remodeled Walmart reopened following the Nov. 22 mass shooting.
The building was evacuated for just under two hours while firefighters investigated.
An on-duty security officer had reported a smell of propane gas in the store and requested the Chesapeake Fire Department to respond, with units dispatched at 6:50 p.m. and the first unit arriving five minutes later.
The store was evacuated while crews sought the source of what was described as a propane gas odor. The smell went away shortly after the fire department arrived, and the Chesapeake Hazardous Materials Team, using gas detection meters throughout the store – including rooftop HVAC units – reported negative findings on all meters, the Chesapeake Fire Department said.
The store was allowed to reopen at 8:45 p.m..
