CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – Chesapeake WIC announced they received the USDA 2024 WIC Breastfeeding Award of Excellence for their breastfeeding support and practices.
This is only one of two WIC gold awards for the Commonwealth, with the Norfolk Department of Public Health WIC Program also receiving the USDA WIC 2024 Gold Award.
According to a release, Virginia WIC aims to improve the health of pregnant women, infants and children by providing nutrition education breastfeeding promotion and support, supplemental nutritious foods and counseling.
“Excellence doesn’t happen by accident,” Chesapeake Health Department Director Dr. Nancy Welch said. “The well-earned recognition of our Chesapeake WIC staff exemplifies the very definition of public health as a community value. We are here to serve.”
Chesapeake WIC is scheduled to host a client celebration on Friday, Aug. 9, from noon to 3 p.m. in order to recognize World Breastfeeding Week.
