Family members pleading for answers eight months after Chesapeake shooting

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A Hampton Roads family continues to grieve eight months after their loved one was killed in a South Norfolk apartment complex. Chesapeake Police say they are actively investigating his death.

Family members describe Levi Reese III as a hard worker who loved his family. They say his life was taken way too soon and they’re hoping someone will come forward with information to help solve his case.

“People say, you know, it gets better day-by-day,” you know,” one family member told 10 On Your Side. “Without his presence here with us, it’s hard.”

Levi Reese III, they say, was the glue that held their family together. Eight months after his death, they say not a day goes by that they don’t think about him.

“I go to bed late at night because that knock some nights I’ll be in my room and [to] remember that night, it was devastating,” said another family member.

Chesapeake Police say 37-year-old Levi Reese III was shot in the area of Linster and Reid Streets, near Hunters Pointe Apartments, around 10:30 p.m. Nov. 8.

Since then family members say they’ve gone back to the apartment complex, hoping someone saw something, or heard something that could help.

“I just want everyone to know that, if the shoes on the other foot and it was your family, you would want someone to say something,” said the family member. “So, if you know something, just say something.”

Family members say the grief weighs on them daily, and since that night they’ve become gun violence awareness advocates in Levi Reese III’s honor.

“Every time that I hear about someone’s child lost to gun violence, it just takes me back to that night that I got that devastating knock on my door, something has to be done.”

Levi Reese III’s family members believe there are witnesses out there who could help, who may not be coming forward, and they hope those people will change their minds and tell police what they know.

“They get to go home to their families, they get to celebrate birthdays, they get to celebrate holidays, they get to celebrate their kids,” said the family member. “We don’t have that with him anymore,” said the family member. “We just have his ashes that we can go and talk to.”

Family members say not only do they deserve answers, but Levi Reese III’s daughters do also.

“He’s not going to be another statistic,” the family member said. “We’re going to find out what happened and the people who are responsible for this, I want them to know you’re going to jail.”
