CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A former lieutenant with the Chesapeake Sheriff’s Office was sentenced this week for financial-related crimes.

Joshua Sawyer was convicted in March on 12 counts of obtain money by false pretense, issuing multiple bad checks and 10 counts of bad checks. He will now serve 189 days in jail and must pay $9,995 in fines.

An indictment indicated Sawyer went to a Bay Point Credit Union almost every day one week in May and passed a bogus check.

Sawyer, who spent 18 years as a deputy, was fired following his conviction.
