CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads (SHR) announced they have completed construction on a house in Chesapeake for a low-income family.

An open house for the four bedroom, 1,500 square foot home is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, July 16, starting at 11:30 a.m. at 1337 Commerce Avenue. Chesapeake Mayor Rick West, along with Executive Director of the Chesapeake Land Bank Authority John Harbin, will be in attendance.

The house was completed thanks to support from funding from the City of Chesapeake, and volunteers from the military, firefighters, law enforcement and Habitat’s Red Hat builders.

Throughout the course of 35 years, Habitat SHR has helped to build over 247 homes for local residents.

“We are so happy to make a dent in the affordable housing crisis in our community and nation with this new home,” Executive Director of Habitat SHR Frank Hruska said. “These open houses are always wonderful opportunities to celebrate with a grateful family.”

According to a press release from Habitat SHR, the homeowner, Crystal, a single mother of two, is responsible for repaying the no-interest mortgage.
