CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – The Virginia State Police responded to a fatal vehicle crash near Poindexter Street in Chesapeake Wednesday afternoon.

State police said at around 4 p.m. the driver of a 2005 Toyota Sienna, 70-year-old Wallace James Miller, Jr., was traveling north on I-464 when he suffered a medical emergency.

The medical emergency caused Miller’s car to run off the roadway and strike the guardrail. Miller then drove back into the lane, where his vehicle then struck a 2018 Freightliner tractor-trailer before running into the guardrail on the right side of the roadway and hitting the Freightliner a second time.

Miller’s vehicle then ran into a ditch, striking several trees, before finally coming to a stop. He was then taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

Police say the driver of the Freightliner was not injured during the incident.

Investigation conducted by police revealed that speed and alcohol were not contributing factors to the crash. Miller was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
