CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — While most families were still asleep in the 1700 block of Faulk Street, 42-year-old Chief Petty Officer Alastair Pobre’s alarm sounded as it was accompanied by the shattering of glass.
Pobre, his fiancée, and their two dogs had just moved into the two-story Deep Creek rental home a month ago.
“I woke up to, like, surging pain in my foot,” Pobre said. “My fiancée, she heard glass. I turn on the light. There’s blood everywhere, and I honestly, thought the dogs bit me, but that wasn’t a fact. I saw a round on the ground and a bullet hole through the window. I immediately called the police, and they checked the trajectory of the bullet.”
Doctors from Navy Medical Center Portsmouth patched the wounds to his left foot but the emotional wounds remain open.
“Being in the military for 19 years, and coming to shore duty here in Virginia and getting a bullet through your windows, kind of scary, you know,” Pobre said.
He said he didn’t know who may have done it, but doesn’t believe he was being targeted.
“I believe it was random gunfire,” he said. “I don’t think it was targeted. We haven’t been here in the area long enough to make any enemies. We don’t go out that much anyway to make enemies. So we just think it was a random incident.”
He said gunfire close-by is not normal, but he does hear it in the distance.
“You hear people think there’s fireworks,” he said. “I don’t think it’s fireworks.”
The source of the gunfire remains unknown. Police are asking for assistance in solving the case. To report a tip, call the Crime at 1-888-LOCK U-UP.
