CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Chesapeake police have arrested a man following a homicide that was originally called in as a domestic situation Monday morning.
According to police, officers responded to the call around 9:30 a.m. Monday in the 600 block of Willow Oak Drive.
When they got to the scene, police learned that a woman, identified as 44-year-old Kathryn Kathleen Dean, had been shot and killed inside the home. She was the estranged wife of the suspect, police say.
The active scene turned into a tactical situation before being cleared by the Chesapeake police SWAT team.
After further investigation, police identified 46-year-old Ben Matthew Wynkoop as a person of interest in the homicide. A short while later, they charged Wynkoop with first-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Court documents show a protective order was served against Wynkoop March 23 at 10:10 a.m. It ordered Wynkoop to stay away from the Willow Oak Drive address and named a mutual friend who would help transfer Wynkoop’s personal property to another location.
Police said Wynkoop was considered armed and extremely dangerous.
Around 5 p.m. Monday, Chesapeake police said Wynkoop had been arrested in Currituck County during a traffic stop just before 5 p.m.
Wynkoop will be booked into the Currituck County Jail and then extradited back to Virginia.
Chesapeake detectives were on the way to Currituck County as of 5:20 p.m. to follow up on the investigation.
The Currituck County Sheriff’s Office said they received information that Wynkoop was within their jurisdiction around 10 a.m. Monday.
The sheriff’s office received a report that Wynkoop had left a Moyock home and was not willing to cooperate with authorities.
Around 4 p.m., the sheriff’s office located Wynkoop’s vehicle coming into Currituck. Authorities “performed a vehicle takedown” and took Wynkoop into custody near Poyners Road.
