UPDATE: According to the owners, Harlem was found safe near the Wawa where he ran off.
CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A Chesapeake family is distraught after their puppy was pushed out of their car Sunday morning as someone tried to steal their vehicle.
The dog is still loose, and for the family, it’s a race against time with the heat.
It has been two days and Nahki Davis is doing everything she can to find her five-month-old Pitbull puppy Harlem.
He ran off from the Wawa at South Military Highway and Yadkin Road after a thief pushed him out of his family’s car.
Around 1 a.m., Davis walked into the store and left Harlem in the car with the AC on. She took her keys with her as a precaution. When she walked back outside, her car was moved across the parking lot.
“I come to find out from security cameras, the guy who tried to steal the vehicle pushed the puppy out of the car before trying to take off in the car. He was not able to get the car because of the safety feature but the puppy has not been located ever since,” Davis told 10 On Your Side.
Harlem, Davis told us, ran off into the woods.
“We’ve been calling shelters, we’ve been on foot,” Davis said.
Its been a race against the heat to find the puppy.
“It is so hot and the fact that he doesn’t have any water, any food, we did place food out in the area,” Davis said. “We have boxes out there with our clothes and stuff in it hoping that would attract him back out. I’ve been out there all night long, I’ve been out there every night trying to find him.”
Davis has even started putting up flyers. Harlem is a five-month-old tan and white Pitbull puppy with a white stripe down his face and has a white chest and white paws.
“He still has his harness on,” Davis said. “It was a tactical vest with a gold leash attached to it with a black handle. I need my son. I need my son back.”
