CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — A teenage boy was shot multiple times overnight in Chesapeake when he went outside to go check on a vehicle, police say.
It happened around 2 a.m. Thursday on Drake Circle at the Ipswich Townvillas.
A neighbor told 10 On Your Side’s Jon Dowding that she called police after hearing six gunshots.
It all started when 17-year-old Chayce Yellis got a notification about movement outside from his security camera.
“I get a motion on my camera and so I just check it and I see people going through the cars, neighbor’s car, my mom’s car and my friend’s car,” he said.
He alerted his friend, 17-year-old Daniel, who went downstairs with him.
Daniel opened the door and was shot nine times by an unknown gunman, who was seen in security video going into one of their cars before the shooting.
“As soon as he went out, no words were spoken or anything. You just see bomb, bomb, bomb. You just see Daniel drop,” said Yellis.
Their neighbor, Sarah Westbrook, says she didn’t even know anything happened until she saw some of the video on her security camera.
“I’m kind of shaken up about it, but it’s something that just doesn’t happen in this area from what I’ve heard,” she said. “So I’m just trying to be positive.”
She and her husband moved to the area a month ago.
She says she’s going to move her infant’s crib away from their upstairs window.
“’Cause right now it’s by the window and we want to move it to the other side cause after that, I don’t want her getting hit just by a misfire or whatever,” said Westbrook.
For Yellis, he’s still in shock witnessing a senseless act happen to his best friend of over six years.
“I don’t know how someone can do that,” said Yellis. “He had no hesitation. When he’s going through our stuff.”
Yellis says Daniel is a hard worker who’d do anything to help out a friend and says he’s been working a lot to save up enough money to buy a car.
“He works in Norfolk and he actually rides his bike to work,” he said. “He gets up, goes to work, comes home. That’s all he really does is work and go home. And he’s a good kid.”
The 17-year-old victim’s mother said he was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and says he’s in stable condition, but is possibly paralyzed.
“I have no words. It just, it really sickens me how someone could just do that,” said Yellis. “He’s just a 17-year-old boy and it just, so fast like that.”
Officers returned to the area later in the morning to knock on doors, and said that they were searching for two unknown suspects pictured below. Police released several photos in hopes someone will recognize them.
