NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Newport News police confirm a 12-year-old boy was shot just before 1 a.m. Thursday morning.

A police spokesperson said the child sustained non life-threatening injuries.

The shooting happened at the Warwick Mobile Home Community on Spur Drive. This is right off of Jefferson Avenue.

Police said dispatch received a call about the shooting at 12:43 a.m.

“I heard knocking sounds, that would usually be firework sounds,” said a neighbor.

That neighbor, who did not want to be identified, said she heard at least five gunshots.

“Then we went out side we saw a whole bunch of people were outside and we were told that it looks like someone shots were fired outside. We were making sure that everyone was safe. And then police officers said that my neighbor’s children was unfortunately grazed by a bullet,” she said.

A WAVY crew counted at least seven bullet holes at the mobile home police taped off.

Several bullets pierced through the mobile home.

Police left the scene after 5:30 a.m.

10 On Your Side saw a forensic unit taking photos of the scene. There were at least 36 evidence markers, and police were monitoring a van that was parked on the street.
