Crush Cancer 2024 holds kickoff event

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — There was a big event in the fight against cancer — on two wheels.

10 On Your Side’s Andy Fox was at the Cavalier Hotel for Thursday’s kickoff of Crush Cancer 2024, where people were able to learn more about the importance of rare cancer research, Crush Cancer’s financial impact and how to get involved.

We also caught up with the Metz family, who photojournalist Cortez Grayson profiled last September.

Ten-year-old Liam Metz is dealing with stage four bone cancer, and just recently learned about this annual event.

“Had we known about something like this, we would have done it,” said Liam’s father, Shawn Metz. “We would have been here. … It hurts, but the beautiful part about it is that the redemption is saving each other.”

The Virginia Beach Fire Department will also play a big role this year, as Crush Cancer has chosen to bring attention to those who serve our community daily to keep people safe, and as a result of their occupation, have increased cancer risks.

Look for Crush Cancer’s Cycle for Survival May 5 at the Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club in Virginia Beach. Join 10 On Your Side’s Andy Fox and the WAVY Warriors on the ride to Crush Cancer, as more than 400 riders are expected to participate, with a goal of raising more than $250,000. Crush Cancer has raised more than $2.1 million since 2015, and Andy has been a supporter of the event since its inception.
