NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Groundhog Day isn’t until Feb. 2, 2025, but one little fellow in Norfolk decided to peek its head out early. Can you see a shadow?

Although it’s not technically the official groundhog, Super Doppler 10 Meteorologist Steve Fundaro did predict a cool front coming in during the week. So … no early spring — yet.

Norfolk does offer groundhog trapping in the area. Norfolk Groundhog Removal is a full service wildlife control company that specializes in removing the animals also known as woodchucks.

These animals are also not protected species and don’t require a kill permit from the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources. They are in constant open season. However, you should contact city or county officials in your area to determine if there are any local trapping or firearms ordinances that apply to nuisance wildlife control. Local ordinances are usually more restrictive than state laws.

The animals are typically active throughout the spring, summer, and early fall, though are true hibernators and usually remain in their dens October-February. Warmer temperatures this year could contribute to this groundhog being seen outside of usual months.
