PARKSLEY, Va. (WAVY) — A firefighter fell through a ceiling while fighting a fire Thursday night in Accomack County near Parksley.
The firefighter was evaluated at the scene and didn’t suffer significant injuries, the Onancock Fire Department says.
“The work our volunteers and career DPS staff do every day is nothing short of fantastic and is rewarding but, IS dangerous! If you think you have what it takes to be a part of our team, we are always looking for dedicated and courageous individuals to help out!,” the department wrote.
It broke around 8:10 p.m. at 26489 Johnson Road, behind Fisher’s Corner on the seaside of Route 13. Onancock says Fire Chief Mike Rydberg had just left Accomack County Fire Commission’s meeting in Bloxom when units from Onancock, Melfa, Parksley, Bloxom and Tasley were dispatched.
Five people were inside the home at the time and were able to safely evacuate. They’ll be assisted by the Red Cross.
“Crews worked diligently and stopped the fire from spreading to other areas of the residence and destroying other personal property inside the home. All personnel on scene did a fantastic job and the fire was extinguished at [8:48 p.m.]”
The cause of the fire has not been released at this time.
