GLOUCESTER COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — A woman was killed and her passenger was seriously hurt after their car was rear ended by a tractor-trailer Thursday afternoon in Gloucester.

Virginia State Police say the driver of the tractor-trailer, Richard E. Hutchison-Wright II of Newport News, was charged with reckless driving.

The crash happened around 2 p.m. on Route 17 at the intersection of T.C. Walker Road.

The tractor-trailer was heading south on Route 17 at the time and Hutchison-Wright wasn’t able to brake in time for stopped traffic, police say.

The truck rear ended a Chevrolet Beretta, pushing the car into the back of a flatbed trailer towed by a Ford F-250.

The driver of the Chevrolet, 25-year-old Ashley N. Chapman of Gloucester, died at the scene. Her passenger was taken to Riverside Regional in Newport News with serious injuries.

The driver of the Ford wasn’t hurt, police say.

The crash is still under investigation by Virginia State Police’s Chesapeake Division Crash Reconstruction Team.
