HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A man has died after a vehicle struck a bicycle on West Mercury Boulevard in Hampton Friday afternoon, police said.
Hampton Police said they got a call around 4:42 p.m. for a bicycle versus vehicle crash in the 200 block of West Mercury Boulevard. When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from life-threatening injuries.
Officers initiated life-saving treatment and the Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue continued those efforts at the scene before the man was taken to a local hospital, where the man later died, police said.
A preliminary investigation by the Hampton Police Division Accident Reconstruction Team is still in its early stages, and the man’s identity is being withheld pending next-of-kin notification.
The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
It’s the second fatal bicycle-vehicle crash in the Hampton Roads region this week. A 43-year-old bicyclist was killed in a crash Wednesday night with a vehicle at the Lynnhaven Parkway-Holland Road intersection.
The driver of the vehicle involved in the Virginia Beach crash stayed on the scene and suffered minor injuries, and no charges have been filed in that crash at this time.
