HAMPTON, Va., (WAVY) — Authorities in Hampton are investigating a boat crash that took place earlier this week near the Grandview Nature Preserve that injured two people, including one who is still hospitalized.

On Sept. 1, on the rocky remains where the old lighthouse used to be, the boat crashed into it.

That boat, a 23-foot 2017 Carolina skiff, was seen laying on its side on the rocks for several days. It has not been removed after its driver, Cortney Cunningham a 49-year-old Hampton resident, struck the pile of rocks.

She stated that a newly installed radar unit failed to detect the rock pile.

The impact of the crash ejected the passenger, 38-year-old Katie Cunningham. She is now in Riverside Newport News Hospital with serious head trauma.

Cunningham remains stable with a skull, orbital, and shoulder fracture as well as 10 broken ribs.

Cornet Cunningham is now out of the hospital but still has broken bones, including a cracked rib and wrist.

Alcohol is not suspected to have been a factor. An investigation is still ongoing with a Virginia Marine Police Critical Incident Response Team investigator conducting a boating accident reconstruction and investigation and monitoring Katie Cunningham’s condition.
