Court documents reveal suspect had murder weapon day after shooting

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Court documents indicate that Ahsan Phillips had the murder weapon in his possession the day after police allege he killed a man in Hampton.

Officers responded to a report of gunshots in the middle of the day on May 19. When they got there, they found 38-year-old Derrick Lindsay in the middle of the road with several gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Hampton EMS crew members.

Court documents state a witness saw Derrick Lindsay in a heated argument with Ericka Phillips around 12:30 p.m. that day. Ahsan Phillips, Ericka’s brother, then pulled up to the house, got out of his SUV and shot Lindsay several times. He then got back in his SUV and drove away.

The next day detectives found that SUV in Newport News at Phillips’ father’s house, where he lives, according to court documents.

Ahsan Phillips left the house with three friends in a different car, court documents state. They were pulled over by Newport News Police for a traffic violation and a police K-9 was used to search the car.

Police found a gun in the car, which Ahsan Phillips said was his. According to court documents, that gun was later determined to be the murder weapon.

Ahsan Phillips has been charged with second-degree murder, possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, willful discharge of a firearm in public and reckless handling.
