HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Second-graders in Hampton City Schools are invited to receive free swim lessons at the new Hampton Aquaplex.

The “Learn to Swim” program is designed to promote fitness and safety, with goals including comfortable submersion, front and back floats, all four forms of kicking for 15 feet, and more.

“We really emphasized safety before we came to the pool. Last week, we talked about procedures of what we were going to be doing at the pool,” explained Aubrey Hicks, a teacher at Albert W. Patrick Elementary.

“I like seeing all my friends and getting to learn new stuff,” said Aubrey Johnson, a Hampton student.

“Just consider how much water is around the students. You want to make sure that not only are they comfortable in the water. That they comfortable around it because it would be hard to live around so much water and be afraid to go near it or in it,” said Jen Obstein, Albert W. Patrick Elementary teacher.

The program began in January at the new swimming facility located at 1908 Coliseum Drive. Students will have five consecutive lessons over the course of one week. The program is a field trip and part of the school day. Over 100 students from Albert W. Patrick Elementary School and Mary W. Jackson Fundamental Elementary School are enrolled this week.

Officials say students will have one hour of pool/deck time each day.
