HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Out of luck and out of time.
While Virginia leaders added several measures to keep residents in their homes during the financial hardships of the pandemic, a Hampton couple still lost their home in September.
Margaret Eaddy said there are little things she took for granted before her family started living in their car. One being having access to a clean bathroom.
She says despite everything her faith and hope remain strong.
“He still asks me if I want to stay here where we lost so much ? I’m still pondering on answering the question,” she said in regards to her husband.
“This was so we could cook and stuff and whatever this is my little vacuum cleaner to clean our riding house,” she said as she described her car parked at Darling Stadium.
“We were out for over a month. Here this is where we were,” she said.
Back in September the Eaddy family was evicted from their home they had just moved into earlier in the year.
Just as the pandemic hit her husband’s hours declined at work, and paying bills became their biggest burden
“It hurts how did this happen? How are we going through this? Why? Who should be held accountable in our city?” she exclaimed.
She showed 10 On Your Side’s Tamara Scott around the part of the city that became their new home
“If the wind blows too hard, I’m thinking is this it? … traumatizing,” she described the city that had already taken so much from them.
“We lost our son in 2014. May 17 of 2014 to gun violence in Hampton,” she said.
And finding a new rental property with an eviction in your past is proving to be impossible
“He deserves better than this all husbands and wives are working hard and they deserve at least somewhere to shelter in, so asking me how I felt. I’m still feeling it now,” she said.
“I feel like I was in war…. I was tense I was overwhelmed I didn’t know who to turn to except for one almighty God,” she added.
The city of Hampton is helping them currently with temporary housing but she says it doesn’t ease the thought they may soon be in this situation again.
So we asked why she wants to stay?
“I believe Hampton can get better. I believe Hampton has some powerful people that believes in good stuff and want to help, so I want to stay cause I want to see that,” she said.
