HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — In yet another case of a person being shot on the interstate, a 51-year-old man was shot in the lower part of his body Tuesday morning in Hampton, according to Virginia State Police.
10 On Your Side has been told the man is expected to recover.
State police say it’s a possible case of road-rage and they are still looking for a suspect.
However, this is just the latest shooting on that stretch of Interstate 664, and there is a trend.
Here’s the trend.
According to State Police, there were 32 highway shootings in 2023 in Hampton Roads, and a lot of them were on the stretch of road I-664 connecting the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel to I-64.
The latest I-664 interstate shooting victim was in a 2019 Toyota Yaris driving northbound on I-664 in the far right lane, just a few car lengths behind a school bus in the middle lane.
The victim claimed that a black car tried to merge in his lane to pass a school bus, according to VSP. When that failed, the suspect came back around the bus, then pulled in next to the victim and opened fire. That’s when he heard a loud pop and realized he had been shot.
At that point, the victim pulled over and called 911 as he watched the black car continue down I-664 northbound until exiting toward I-64 westbound.
The 51-year-old man went to hospital with a non-life-threatening injury to the lower part of the body, police said. State Police said they responded to the incident around 6:23 a.m.
Traffic camera footage from the Virginia Department of Transportation showed troopers on the scene around 7 a.m., blocking off the north left lane and left shoulder on I-664 at the 1 mile mark in the city of Hampton.
This is just the latest incident.
Last August, 10 On Your Side reported on an interstate shooting in Newport News on I-664 the same stretch of road.
Virginia State Police responded and found a car with driver and passenger severely injured on I-664.
A trooper relayed information to dispatch:
“I can’t seem to see what he is doing,” a trooper called into police dispatch. “He is down on the passenger side. It looks like there are bullet holes all over the floor … the driver-side window is already shattered, and I’m trying to get the driver to respond to me.”
Sadly, a 24-year-old died at the scene and another was injured.
Six hours earlier Virginia State Police had responded to another shooting on I-664 south bound near Chestnut Avenue and Aberdeen Road
State Police report that two people knew each other and had an argument. They got out of the car and shots were fired.
One man injured as he ran from the area.
Hampton resident Jess Graves called it the ultimate road rage.
“There really is no reason for it,” Graves said, “and it puts so many more people at risk than just you and the person you are having a problem with.”
Graves thinks about it while she’s driving and if she sees anything remotely suspicious.
“Usually when I see people looking like they are getting irritated,” Graves said, “I make sure to keep my distance just in case something like that happens.”
State Police seek assistance for information on this latest interstate shooting.
