HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Hampton Police said one person died Tuesday evening from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a traffic stop in response to a brandishing and abduction complaint.

Police responded to a shooting in the 2300 block of West Mercury Blvd. near the intersection with Aberdeen Road around 9:15 p.m. in reference to a brandishing and abduction complaint.

The driver, a 35-year-old man, suffered a life-threatening injury and was taken to a local hospital, where he later died, police said.

Detectives from Hampton Police’s Major Crimes Unit are investigating the incident.
