HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — The Hampton Sheriff’s Office wants the public to be aware of a rise scammers impersonating deputies.
According to the sheriff’s office, the scammers call potential victims with some type of personal information, such as an old or current address or date of birth making the victim believe the call is real.
Scammers then insist there is a warrant for the victim’s arrest due to a missed court date or missed jury duty and demand payment in order to avoid arrest.
The impersonators ask for a specific payment method, such as PayPal or a
Green Dot money card and demand the victim to remain on the phone while completing the
payment.
Officials said some scammers have brazenly told victims to meet them at the sheriff’s office to complete the transaction and satisfy the arrest warrant.
As a reminder, law enforcement will never make phone calls requesting money. Anyone who receives this type of call should avoid disclosing any personal information and never agree to meet with the caller.
