HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – Hampton’s National Institute of Aerospace (NIA) confirmed to WAVY TV 10 it will be laying off some of its employees at the end of next month.
There is a WARN Notice posted on the Virginia Employment Commission (VEC) website about the NIA layoffs.
WAVY initially reported there would be 125 employee positions eliminated, based on the information on the WARN site, but NIA says this is incorrect.
A representative for NIA provided a copy of a letter submitted to the Virginia Employment Commission on March 31. It states that the Hampton facility will be downsizing, beginning May 31, which could result in the layoff of up to 65 employees. Research scientist, engineer and a few administrative support positions are impacted.
The layoffs are directly related to NIA’s contracts with NASA Langley Research Center ending.
According to NIA, many of the employees impacted by the layoffs will be likely be hired by the next contractor.
We reached out to the Virginia Employment Commission, which manages the WARN Notices, to inquire why 125 NIA employee layoffs are listed on that website.
On Thursday, WAVY received a response VEC stating that they corrected the number of layoffs at NIA, on their website. It now states 65 employees affected.
The non-profit research, graduate education, and outreach institute was created in 2002 by NASA’s Langley Research Center.
