HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Officials say a man was found dead after firefighters responded to a house fire in Hampton over the weekend.

Hampton fire officials said in a news release units were called to a fire in the 30 block of E. Mercury Boulevard around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 19.

Responding units found heavy smoke coming from a second story window. Firefighters contained the fire to the room where it started and had the flames extinguished within 20 minutes, officials said.

The room suffered heavy fire and smoke damage in the fire.

Officials siad the cause of the man’s death will be determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office.

The cause of the fire is undtermined, but officials said it appears to have been accidental in nature and not suspicious.
