HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – A 19-year-old Virginia Beach man has been arrested in connection to a deadly shooting Sunday night in Hampton.

The Hampton Police Division arrested Michael Goffigan in connection to what it said was a homicide in the 100 block of St. George Way. Goffigan is facing charges of second-degree murder, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm in a public place.

Hampton Police said further investigation showed that the victim, 20-year-old Tayvion Williams, and Goffigan were involved in a physical altercation when it escalated to the exchange of gunfire. Both the suspect and Williams were struck.

Police said the suspect left the area before officers arrived and took himself to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Williams was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
