HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Hampton Police are asking people to avoid the area around West Lamington Road due to a potential hazmat situation after receiving a call for a possible drug overdose Friday evening.
Police said they responded and found a 43-year-old Hampton man inside a shed, behind a residence, who was unconscious but breathing. The man was taken to a local hospital, police said.
A preliminary investigation showed that materials were found “that are consistent with making methamphetamine as well as a possible explosive device.”
Nearby residents were asked to evacuate, police said.
The Newport News Fire Department Bomb Squad and the Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue hazmat team are at the scene and helping Hampton Police with the investigation.
The Virginia State Police/Drug Enforcement Agency Division 5 Drug Clandestine Unit has also been notified.
A woman with active warrants on file who was at the scene was taken into custody, police said.
