HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Police are investigating a deadly shooting Friday morning on Pembroke Avenue in Hampton.

Emergency dispatchers said they received the call just before 2:30 a.m. for a gunshot victim in the 1600 block of Pembroke Avenue.

Police say a man was pronounced dead on scene. They waiting to release the victim’s name until family is notified.

Around 11 a.m. Saturday, Hampton Police say they arrested 30-year-old Newport News resident Tyshawn Joseph DeShields in connection to the shooting.

A neighbor who lives across the small courtyard from where it happened showed 10 On Your Side a bullet hole right above his bedroom window.

He told us he was afraid for his young children who live there.

Another neighbor only realized what had happened when he woke up to this large area cordoned off by crime scene tape.

“I moved out here ’cause I saw kids playing about a year ago and everything seemed fine. I know it used to be kind of a rough area but since I’ve been here its been just as quiet as can be,” he said.

Police are still investigating the circumstances and a possible motive.
