Video: I-64 eastbound lane reopens at HRBT, delays continue after vehicle fire

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — One eastbound I-64 lane is open at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel after a vehicle fire shut down all lanes for much of the day Tuesday.

A Virginia Department of Transportation spokesperson said its bridge engineers and operations staff have wrapped up an initial inspection and are looking at the conditions of the impacted road in the right lane.

“The bridge structure remains structurally sound and safe for motorists,” the VDOT spokesperson said, “with no structural damage found affecting the bridge’s integrity or safety.”

The right eastbound lane of I-64 will remain closed until an assessment of the road conditions is finished and any plans for repairs are identified.

VDOT said traffic is backed up for several miles, with the fire on the Hampton side of the HRBT.

Norfolk Fire-Rescue, Naval Regional Fire and Hampton Fire-Rescue responded to the scene, along with state police. Hazmat units also assisted.

A spokesperson for the Norfolk Fire Department said the eastbound lanes of the HRBT would be closed for an “unknown time.” He also said no injuries were reported.

There is a detour in place at exit 267, which is Settlers Landing Road.

Virginia State Police confirmed there was no crash associated with this vehicle fire.

WAVY started receiving messages from viewers about the vehicle fire shortly before 11 a.m.

Photos from the scene show black smoke and heavy flames coming from the vehicle.

A WAVY 10 viewer sent video of the vehicle fire, showing more of the black smoke.
