NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Hampton Roads Transit celebrated the return on OnDemand Microtransit Monday with events in Newport News and Virginia Beach.
In August, Virginia Beach City Council voted 10-0 to approve the service, which would charge passengers $2 per ride and pair riders who are traveling on the same path through an app. A vehicle would then pick riders up at a virtual bus stop.
The service in Virginia Beach covers 15 square miles centered along Independence Avenue, and includes stops at Town Center and Virginia Wesleyan. The Newport News service will cover 20 square miles, and includes stops at Patrick Henry Mall and Christopher Newport University.
To celebrate the services return, free fares will be available for the first two weeks.
At both events, city officials, business leaders, HRT president and CEO William Harrell and representatives from Via were in attendance.
