PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) announced that all transit travel will be free on Election Day, Nov. 5.

The free-fare access will extends to all buses, light rail, ferry, paratransit and upcoming microtransit in order to help voters get to the polls.

“With free-fare access to HRT’s comprehensive transit solutions throughout Hampton Roads, we want to make sure we’re doing our part to facilitate mobility on Election Day,” President and CEO William E. Harrell said.

According to the U.S. Census, around 2.4% of Americans reported lack of transportation as a main factor to not voting in the 2020 elections.

Currently, HRT offers four free-fare days, which can be found below:

  • Transit Equity Day — Feb. 4, 2025
  • Earth Day — April 22
  • Juneteenth — June 19
  • Election Day — Nov. 5, 2024
