I-64 lane closures scheduled to begin April 7

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Motorist can expect lane and ramp closures along I-64 starting as early as 7 p.m. Sunday.

The closures are due to construction on the I-64 Southside Widening and High Rise Bridge Project.


According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) the project will increase capacity, improve safety along the corridor, reduce congestion and enhance a regional evacuation route.

Overnight closure and detour of the on-ramp to I-64 east from George Washington Highway north April 5-7 and April 11-13 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Overnight closure and detour of the off-ramp from I-64 east to George Washington Highway south (exit 296B) April 5-7 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Overnight closure and detour of the off-ramp from I-64 west to Great Bridge Boulevard (exit 292A) April 8-13 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. 

Motorists traveling on I-64 west (toward Virginia Beach) should use the detour listed below:

Motorists should use the Cloverleaf detour.

Operations will be coordinated to avoid concurrent ramp closures along the proposed detour routes.

Motorists should follow the signed detour, using exit 297 to Military Highway and turn onto George Washington Highway.
