CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Motorist can expect lane and ramp closures along I-64 starting as early as 7 p.m. Sunday.
The closures are due to construction on the I-64 Southside Widening and High Rise Bridge Project.
According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) the project will increase capacity, improve safety along the corridor, reduce congestion and enhance a regional evacuation route.
A list of scheduled closures can be found below.
Motorists can anticipate the following overnight alternating, single-lane closures:
- I-64 in both directions from Bowers Hill to the Shell Road overpass (approximate mile marker 295) April 7-14 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- I-64 east from Greenbrier Parkway (exit 289) to the High Rise Bridge April 7-14 from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- I-64 west from the High Rise Bridge to Battlefield Boulevard (exit 290) April 7-14 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Motorists can also anticipate the following overnight multi-lane closure:
- I-64 east from I-464 (exit 291) to the High Rise Bridge April 8-10 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., including the Express Lane
Overnight closure and detour of the on-ramp to I-64 east from George Washington Highway north April 5-7 and April 11-13 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- Motorists should follow GW Hwy (17) north to 64 east detour
Overnight closure and detour of the off-ramp from I-64 east to George Washington Highway south (exit 296B) April 5-7 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- Motorists should follow 64 east to GW Hwy (17) south detour
Overnight closure and detour of the off-ramp from I-64 west to Great Bridge Boulevard (exit 292A) April 8-13 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Motorists traveling on I-64 west (toward Virginia Beach) should use the detour listed below:
- Exit 291A to I-464 north
- Exit 1 to I-64 east
- Exit 291B to Route 168 south
- Right exit to Great Bridge Boulevard
Overnight closure and detour of the off-ramp from I-64 west to Route 168/Chesapeake Expressway April 8-13 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Motorists should use the Cloverleaf detour.
- 64 west to 168 south
Operations will be coordinated to avoid concurrent ramp closures along the proposed detour routes.
Overnight closure and detour of the on-ramp to I-64 west from Route 168 north/Chesapeake Expressway April 8-13 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Motorists should use the detour listed below.
- Take the on-ramp to I-464 north (exit 1)
- Take the I-464/I-64 cloverleaf ramps to I-64 west
Operations will be coordinated to avoid concurrent ramp closures along the proposed detour routes.
Overnight closure and detour of the ramp from I-464 south to I-64 west (exit 1A) April 8-13 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Motorists should follow the detour below:
- Continue on I-464 south and onto Route 168 south
- Take the Route 168/Battlefield Boulevard loops to Route 168 north
- Take exit 15A to I-64 west
Operations will be coordinated to avoid concurrent ramp closures along the proposed detour routes.
Overnight closure and detour of the ramp from I-64 west to I-464 north (exit 291A) April 8-13 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Motorists should follow the detour below:
- Continue on I-64 west
- Use exit 290 to the Battlefield Boulevard loops to access I-64 east
- Take exit 291A to I-464 north
Operations will be coordinated to avoid concurrent ramp closures along the proposed detour routes.
Overnight closure and detour of the ramp from I-64 east to I-464 north (exit 291A) April 10-12 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- Motorists should use the cloverleaf detour below.
Overnight closure and detour of ramp from I-64 east to I-464 south (exit 291B) April 10-12 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Motorists should follow the detour below:
- Take exit 291A to I-464 north
- Take exit 2 to Military Highway
- Turn left on Military Highway
- Take the on-ramp to I-464 south
Overnight closure and detour of the off-ramp from I-64 east to George Washington Highway north (exit 296A) April 11-13 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Motorists should follow the signed detour, using exit 297 to Military Highway and turn onto George Washington Highway.
