WINDSOR, N.C. (WAVY) — Craig Wissink was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder of Sgt. Meggan Callahan back in 2017 while he was in the Bertie Correctional Institute, according to an article by The Daily Advance.

Wissink was currently already serving a life sentence for a 2004 murder conviction in Cumberland County. Then, on April 26, 2017, Meggan was responding to a trash fire inside the dormitory, and was attacked by Wissink. He was able to get the fire extinguisher from her and beat her to the point where she died from her injuries.

He was charged in the murder on April 26, 2017. He has around 25 charges to his name since 2013, according to the North Carolina Department Of Adult Correction Offender Public Information’s website.

Wissink said he was sorry for Meggan’s murder. Meggan’s mother, Wendy, said she didn’t support the death penalty as his sentence and forgives Wissink, according to the Daily Advance’s report.

Wissink is under high security for first-degree murder.
