JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — A 25-year-old woman is dead, and two people were seriously injured after an overnight crash in James City County, according to Virginia State Police.
On Sunday, March 24 just before 3 a.m., state police received several calls about an older model Toyota sedan driving the wrong way on I-64.
When troopers arrived on the scene, they discovered the vehicle had driven off the roadway and into a guardrail. Police also said the driver was intoxicated.
As crews worked to clear the scene, fire and rescue had the right lane blocked, with the assistance of a VDOT Safety Service Patroller. Cones were in place and the safety patroller vehicle’s arrow board was illuminated, directing traffic to the left lane.
A short time later, a 2017 Toyota Corolla drove into the back of the VDOT truck. The driver, 25-year-old Ayanna E. Coan, of Newport News, died upon impact and the two passengers suffered serious life threatening injuries.
The female passenger was taken to Riverside Regional Hospital and the male passenger was flown to VCU, Richmond. The VDOT patroller was not injured in the crash.
At this time, police have not determined whether alcohol was a contributing factor in the fatal crash. However, troopers did say the occupants of the vehicle were wearing seatbelts.
Police said the crash is still under investigation and the Commonwealth Attorney has been contacted.
