JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) – One person died in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 64 eastbound in James City County, Virginia State Police said.
The crash took place at about 3:13 p.m., and was at mile marker 233.5 on I-64 eastbound near Lightfoot Road, west of Route 143, State Police said.
The driver of a 2013 Honda CRV, Mish Kara, 80, of Williamsburg, was traveling in the right lane and rear-ended a 2016 Volvo tractor trailer, according to State Police, losing control of the vehicle and driving off the roadway and onto the shoulder, where it came to rest on its side. Kara died at the scene, State Police said.
The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured, and neither alcohol nor speed were contributing factors, according to State Police.
The Virginia Department of Transportation said all eastbound lanes of I-64 were closed at exit 231 (Rt. 30/York River State Park), with a detour in place to Croaker Road. Eastbound drivers were able to get back on I-64 eastbound at exit 234 at Lightfoot.
State Police said there was also a multi-vehicle crash on I-64 westbound, west of Shell Road at mile marker 295 in Chesapeake, with all lanes blocked.
