JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — A 79-year-old man died after crashing into a VDOT service truck on eastbound Interstate 64 in James City County on May 29, Virginia State Police said.

VDOT issued its first alert about the crash, which happened near the Newport News line at Lee Hall Exit 247, and lane closures just after 2 p.m.

Police say the safety service patrol truck was traveling east on I-64 when it was rear-ended by a Toyota Camry. The truck was on its way to help out with a disabled vehicle at the time and stopped in the deceleration line for exit 247.

Police say the driver of the VDOT truck saw the oncoming Camry and tried to pull away, but was struck by the Camry. The VDOT truck overturned in the collision.

The driver of the Camry, 79-year-old Louis M. Manning of Midlothian, later died at the hospital. He was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash, police said.

The VDOT worker, 22-year-old Jaquay Johnson of Norfolk, suffered minor injuries and was also wearing a seat belt.

Police say the crash remains under investigation.
