Police said boaters near the Jamestown Ferry disturbed a federally-protected osprey nest around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, and it caused a young bird to fall into the water and become waterlogged.

A park attendant “commendably rescued the bird,” police said, and James City County fire personnel returned it to its nest after ensuring its safety.

Police said they are looking for photo and video footage of the boaters involved from anyone who was present, whether they were on the Jamestown/Scotland Ferry, the bridge or by the waterfront. People with such footage can contact Ranger Jennifer Garcia at jennifer.garcia@jamescitycountyva.gov.

“We urge those responsible to come forward,” police said.
