Leslie Mehta wins Democratic nomination for Virginia’s 1st Congressional District: The civil rights attorney will now face Republican incumbent Rob Wittman in the primary.
Missy Cotter Smasal wins the Democratic primary for Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District, AP projects. She’ll face Republican Jen Kiggans in the general election.
Kiggans shared this statement on Tuesday night:
“Missy Cotter Smasal is an out-of-touch liberal activist who would be nothing more than a rubber stamp for Joe Biden and the Democrats’ destructive policies. This November, voters in southeast Virginia will once again reject Washington liberals’ failed agenda and reelect Jen Kiggans, a commonsense conservative with a proven track record of delivering results for families, veterans, and seniors. Virginians are tired of the Democrats taking our country and our Commonwealth in the wrong direction and will come out in November to vote against weak leadership and misguided policies. Missy is the wrong choice for Virginia and the wrong choice for America.”

Republican Hung Cao wins U.S. Senate primary race: Cao, a Navy veteran endorsed by former President Donald Trump, beat four Republican challengers to win his primary. Early results showed Cao with a substantial lead compared to each of his opponents. He’ll face incumbent Democrat Tim Kaine in the general election.
Sen. Kaine released this statement in response on Tuesday night:
“I’ve been standing up for Virginians for 40 years as a civil rights lawyer and public servant representing my city, Commonwealth and country. As your Senator, I’ll keep standing up for an economy that works for all, affordable healthcare, reproductive freedom, enhanced career and technical education and strengthening our military and allies while supporting our troops, veterans, and their families.
“I’m facing an opponent who called a Staunton newspaper ‘podunk’ and claimed that traveling from Northern Virginia to Abingdon for a candidate forum would be ‘ridonkulous.’ How elitist!
“You know I’ll stand up for you because I always show up for you.”

Other results from around the commonwealth:
- Democratic incumbent Gerald Connolly won his primary for Virginia’s 11th Congressional District, the AP reports.
- Mike Clancy won the Republican primary for Virginia’s 10th Congressional District. Democratic incumbent Jennifer Wexton is retiring from the seat after being diagnosed with a rare diagnosis she called “Parkinson’s on steroids.”
- State Sen. Suhas Subramanyam won the Democratic primary for Virginia’s 10th Congressional District, beating 11 other candidates, Decision Desk HQ reports. He was endorsed by Rep. Jennifer Wexton, who’s retiring.
- Eugene Vindman won the Democratic nomination for Virginia’s 7th Congressional District race. The district is is currently represented by Democrat Abigail Spanberger, who’s running for Virginia governor.
- Derrick Anderson won the Republican nomination for Virginia’s 7th Congressional District.
